Chris G, Jim, Alex, and Ben settled in to play Eclipse for the rest of the day. Wolfie’s Hydran Progress was the clear winner at 48 points, boosted by getting (and keeping) a supernova on turn one, with Alex’s Orion Hegemony the runner up at 35.

Matt, Mary, Chris C, Michael, and Ben played Wingspan with Michael winning at 86 points,  followed by Chris at 83.

Mary and Chris C were victorious the villains against Michael and Ben’s spies in a learning game of Sabotage. Mary had to leave, but Chris took over both villains for a full game and once again defeated the spies before they could stop his doomsday device.

BEWC Meeting Recap 11/16/2013

Attendees: Alex Jordan, Alex Wright, Bruce Clark, Dan Carey, Michael Feinberg, Jim Halloran, Victor Liu and Chris Cregan

1)Jim and Alex W. played a game of Twilight Struggle.  Jim as the Soviets came out the victor.

2) Chris, Victor, Alex J, Michael and Bruce played a round of Lords of Waterdeep with the new expansion Scoundrels of Skullport.  Chris came out in first with 178 points followed by Michael with 149, Alex at 145 Bruce at 143 and Victor with 132.

3) Chris, Victor, Alex J, Michael and Bruce then played a round of Citadels, substituting out the witch for the assassin.  Alex W. managed to end the game with 27 points followed closely by Victor with 25, Chris with 24 Alex J. at 17 and Michael with 16.

4) Jim and Dan played a round of A Distant Plain.  Jim played coalition and Dan played the Taliban, both players lost to the Afghani government.

5) Finally Chris Jim and Alex J played a game of Eclipse with the expansion.  Playing with ancient homeworlds all players found themselves fairly isolated for the majority of the game.  Adopting completely peaceful means no player against player combat occurred the entire game.  Michael won with a science heavy strategy, completely filling up his board with tech, and ended with 64 points.  Chris got 2nd with 56 due to a combination of high combat points from defeating ancients and a racial bonus for occupied orbitals.  Alex started completely surrounded by ancients and had his early fleet demolished in his first assault ending only at 12.

BEWC Meeting Recap 10/19/13

Attendees: Alex Jordan, Michael Feinberg, Jim Halloran, and Chris Cregan

1)Michael Alex and Jim started off with a game of Tsuro.  Alex fell off early though both Jim and Michael managed to survive to the last piece.  Both players found their pieces staring accros the last blank space and it was determined both Jim and Michael would share victory.

2)Next up Eclipse was brought out with the expansion Rise of the Ancients.  Michael fell to a couple of early losses to some ancients and was not able to come back till considerably later in the game.  Jim and Alex both sent huge armadas to the galactic center on the same turn.  Jim’s fleet got a good volley of missiles off initially but Alex’s thick armor proved better in the long drawn out battle.  Alex then easily handled the new GCD.  Chris spent the majority of the game exploring and fighting the ancients.  In the end Chris beat out Alex 40-38 with both players taking control of several points from both of the weaker civilizations.  Michael fared better than Jim, 23 to 15, due to more tech and a larger empire.  Jim had more expensive techs but they were spread out, the majority of his points coming from the few remaining ancients.

*It should be noted that two rather large mistakes were made during this game.  The rules for combat were mistaken, victims were choosing causality’s instead of offender.  Secondly Alex, being new to the game, was double counting his income for the first half of the game.

3) Cosmic Encounter finished off the day with a shared victory between Chris and Michael over Alex and Jim.

BEWC Meeting Recap 1/19/13

Attendees: Shane Andrews, John Boyle, Ben Blankley, Greg Chandra, Michael Feinberg, Ryan Frans, Jim Halloran, Richard Heller, Paul Hsu, Michael Kelly, Melissa Laface, and Lane Taylor

Club Business: 2013 officers were elected and we voted to purchase Lords of Waterdeep and The New Science.

Games Played:
1) Shane, John, Michael F, and Paul started with a game of Puerto Rico. Michael was the only one who had played before, giving him a significant advantage, but everyone else seemed to pick up the mechanics and some strategy fairly quickly. Michael turned an early coffee monopoly combined with both the large and small markets into a money making machine, allowing him to build three of the 4 point large buildings. Michael won with 44 points, largely from buildings, but Shane wasn’t far behind with 38 points from an impressive shipping operation.

2) Jim, Michael K, and Lane considered playing Flat Top, but after being looking at the time commitment and complexity decided to switch to Shogun. They only played one year, which was characterized by the peasants being much stronger than expected and an extremely close result – Michael 22, Lane 21, and Jim 20.

3) Melissa taught Shane and Paul Ora et Labora where she won with a comfortable lead.

4) John, Michael F, Ryan, and Richard played a close fought game of Eclipse. The game had very little early combat, with Richard as the Planta and John as the Descendants of Draco both significantly expanding and leaving Ryan’s Mechanema and particularly Michael’s Hydran Progress mostly isolated. Ryan was able to take over the galactic center and start an arms race with Richard (as well as breaking his treaty with John and conquering one of his systems), but Michael was left to concentrate on technology and hope that point-scoring monoliths would become available. They finally did on the last turn, but Michael built them one action too early, committing all of his production, which had been serving as a check against Ryan’s aggression since it could have rapidly been turned into a fleet of technologically advanced ships. Once that threat was gone, Ryan turned his fleet against Michael instead of Richard and conquered all but one of his systems, knocking Michael down to only 19 points at the end of the game. The game ended with a bang, when Richard sent in a pair of cruisers each armed with 3 plasma missiles against a large fleet of Ryan’s and lucky rolling caused him to hit on 10 of his 12 dice – one more than the nine needed to wipe him out. Unfortunately Richard didn’t have neutron bombs, so couldn’t conquer the system and transfer its points from Ryan to him. That left Ryan winning the game with 42 points to Richard’s 38.

5) Jim and Michael K spent the afternoon with Twilight Struggle, where Michael’s communists prevailed in the 10th round.

6) Ben and Greg taught themselves the Rivals for Catan card game. Once they figured out what they were doing, they enjoyed themselves with Ben winning.

7) Ben, Greg, Michael F, Richard, and Melissa finished up with 7 Wonders with both the Leaders and Cities expansions. Richard amassed an impressive 55 points in science, but his 65 total points weren’t enough to catch up with Melissa, who took good advantage of the expansions to earn 26 points from white and black cards. Combined with a generally diversified strategy otherwise, she net 68 points for the win. Michael edged out Richard for second place, also with 65 points, mostly from guilds and blue cards and with more leftover money for the tiebreaker.

BEWC Meeting Recap 8/18/12

Attendees: Chris Cregan, Tim Denney, Michael Feinberg, Jim Halloran, and Chris Leitenberger

Club Business: None.

Games Played
1) Chris C, Michael, Jim, and Chris L started out with a game of Eminent Domain. When we totaled up the scored Chris C and Jim thought they were going to have to figure out the tie breaker rules with their score of 20 points, but Chris L ended up edging them out with 22.

2) Chris C, Tim, Michael, Jim, and Chris L played Eclipse, all as Terrans. Michael had good early luck with exploration tiles and technology selection and was able to quickly build a strong economy, making him the identified leader and the target for the other players. The board was very isolated, other than through the center, each player only had contact with one of the others, except for Chris L who had no contact at all, but both Chris L and Jim had to build up their fleets to destroy the ancient ships in their sectors. Chris L then turned that fleet to the GCDS and claimed the center tile, opening up the board. Given Michael’s apparent position as the leader, Chris L made diplomatic agreements with all of the other players and Michael was forced to switch from building orbitals within his own territory to expand his economy and instead build up defenses on his border with Chris. A stalemate and arms race settled in for the rest of the game, broken only when Jim researched Wormhole Generator on the second to last turn and attacked Michael in two of his previously inaccessible systems. After some quick redeployment, building, and upgrading the two forces were fairly evenly matched, but Jim managed victory in both battles. On the final round, Michael managed to hold off Jim’s second thrust and reclaim one of his initial territories, but the damage of the pick-on the leader strategy had been done. Michael ended up dead last, with only 17 points. Chris L was in the lead with 36, but Chris C, who had spent the whole game exploring his own sector and managed to never have to build or upgrade a single offensive ship and instead had a huge economy devoted to building point scoring monoliths, also reached 36 points. The tie breaker is most remaining production, which Chris C won 31, to 26.

3,4) Chris C and Michael played two games of Tsuro. Chris quickly won the first one, but the second one went down to the last tiles, with Chris being able to hold out one tile longer.

5) Chris C and Michael finished up with the Battlelore scenario A Complex Web. Chris, as Edward of Woodstock, quickly took control of the center of the board drawing two Advance cards early and being able to wipe out Owain the Red Hand (Michael’s) giant spider. Michael struggled to hold it own and the game was somewhat even with Chris having destroyed three units to Michael’s two, but then Chris got a Forward card allowing him to activate six units and paired it with a lore spell giving them all extra die and hits and was able to destroy the final three units he needed in a single turn.
