BEWC Meeting Recap 12/6/14

Attendees: Jim Halloran, Scott Harris, Dennis Henning, Alex Jordan, Dave Landon, Ed McGran, Dave Olson, Alex Wright

1) All attendees (Except Dave O.) started with a game of 7 Wonders with Alex Wright pulling off an impressive science-heavy 62-ish point win.

2) All attendees played three games of The Resistance.  The first game was won by spies Scott, Dennis and Dave O.  The second game saw a win by the Resistance, with Dennis, Dave L. and Jim failing as the spies.  The final game was another win for the spies, with Alex J., Scott and Dave L. getting the win.

3) Jim (Dwarves), Alex J (Undead), Ed (Goblins) and Dave O (Humans) played a partial game of Warparty.  It was dwarves and humans vs. goblins and undead. The undead were having a fairly easy time of it with the humans, and the dwarves and goblins were at each other’s throats, with possibly a small advantage to the dwarves in the end based on the  heroes’ experience levels.  There was no obvious winner when the game was called off.

4) Dennis, Dave L and Alex W played three games of Dominion, with Alex winning all three.

5) Dennis, Dave L and Alex played Attika, with Dave L emerging victorious.

BEWC Meeting Recap 11/15/14

Attendees: Michael Feinberg, Jim Halloran, Chris Cregan, Dave Olson, Alex Jordan, Jay Olson, Ken MacArthur, Jeremee Schrear, Ed Magran, Ryan Frans, Anthony Eaton, Maria and Matt Willey

1) The meeting started with a game of Seven Wonders with Alex managing to just squeak out a victory as Alexandria with 59 points.  Jay was next at 56 with Giza, Micheal got 47 with Babylon even with missing a couple science buildings, for his first game Ken got 44 as Halikanarsis, Jim was just behind him with 43 as olympia, Dave got 37 as Rhodes and Jeremee got 32 as Ephesos.

2) While that was finishing up Ed set up Fire on the Lake.  Matt and Maria started off as the Veit Con but were later relieved by Ryan when they left.  Ed played as the Americans and Jim played as the US allied Vietnamese.  Things started off well for the Americans as they demolished the NBA but near the end the were getting surrounded by new forces and were trying to pull back from the War before they started racking up casualties.  Unfortunately the game did not end up getting finished.

3) Another long game was going on at a different table.  Ken, Jeremee and Jay all delved into a dungeon in Descent.  Despite Dave, an experienced and cruel Dungeon Master, the party managed to survive long enough against Giants and other monsters to win out in the end.

4)The third and final long game was Firefly.  The captains were tasked with a series of highly deadly jobs, each one likely to kill one or more of their crew.  It was a game of riches, as good characters and ship upgrades were easily drawn at the start of the game.  Anthony got off to a very quick start, a crew of hill folk and Jane as well as an assortment of firepower.  He was the first to grab up the first Goal token but was harassed by a Reaver on the way to the 2nd.  He lost several crew and more importantly turns allowing Micheal to pass him, grabbing the 2nd token and making his way to the final objective overcoming some Reaver road blocks.  Alex had a good game but got poor luck on the objective cards and ended up being a few turns behind Micheal.  Chris was probably playing a different game.  He spent the game in the slow freighter ship collecting cargo and finishing log haul trucking missions.  He ended up being incredibly wealthy and in dead last.  Micheal won the game with both Anthony and Alex close behind.

5) To end the day off three games of Bang the Dice Game were played by Chris Jeremee, Mike Jay Alex and Anthony.  It was a bad day for the law as the outlaws proceeded to get a hat trick.  Chris Dave and Jeremee won  the first game, Micheal Anthony and Jay the 2nd, and finally Dave Chris and Jeremee won the final.

BEWC Meeting Recap 8/2/14

Attendees: Karen Landon, Dave Landon, Greg Chandra, Michael Feinberg, Jim Halloran, Matt Walker

1)  The day started off with a nice friendly game of Blokus.  Jim won with a commendable score of 25, Karen had 19, Matt ended with 17 and Michael got 12.  The second game saw Matt get 17 again and Michael got 12 however these ended up being the high scores in a much more confrontational game.

2) Next up was elephant racing in Formula E.  It was a mad scramble as sacred cows continually blocked the way of the racers making them smash together in several deadlocks.  Karen managed to break out of one of these cow walls only to close the hole up behind her allowing her to distance herself from the pack.  While she was continually plagued by mouse problems she managed to cross the finish line just as the rest of the pack was starting to make it near scoring range.

3) 7 Wonders with Dave’s new leaders expansion was played next.  With a very heavy military focus Michael managed to destroy his opponents getting a grand total of 80 points.  Over twenty points more than 2nd, everyone else was neck and neck though.  Next up was Karen and Dan at 59, Chris at 55, Matt at 53  Dave at 52 and Jim at 47.

4) Finally there was a five player Firefly game.  In the mission The Choices We Make players got goal tokens for completing Illegal jobs, and what’s more they could STEAL goals from other players with a successful piracy mission.  Chris managed to win after attacking Greg, stealing one token from him and gaining another for a completed illegal piracy job.  From Jubal his captain to his expanded 9 person crew he was well set up for piracy.  Michael though, had over a fifty-fifty chance to beat him a turn before, attempting to board Dave for the victory.  Dave had some thrillin’ heroics though and soundly rebuffed the attackers.  It should be noted that it was Dave, Matt and Greg’s first game.

BEWC Meeting Recap 6/7/14

Attendees: Brandon James, Michael Feinberg, Scott Harris, Victor Lui, Alex Wright, Chris Cregan, Karen and Dave Landon

1) Scott, Victor, Alex and Chris all pretended to be giant monsters destroying a city in Rampage.  They began the game by ignoring the buildings, people and objectives and instead focused on knocking each other’s teeth out.  Only after the majority of players had two teeth left (the minimum) did they focus on taking down the buildings.  Until it was discovered that you could steal people from other monsters by attacking them at which point they continued their monster brawl, ignoring the last standing building until it was destroyed by accident.Scott ended with the most people and a score of 33.  Alex ate the most floors and ended with 26.  Chris had the most teeth and ended with 17.  Victor destroyed the most building but only ended with six points.

2) Michael had completed his all-in-one box for his Dominion set.  They, Michael, Victor, Scott and Karen then played a heavily seaside influenced deck with both sea hag and the pirate ship.  It came down to the tie breaker (turn order) with Victor just edging out Scott both at 27.  Michael had 22 and Karen had 11.

3) Alex, Chris, Brandon and Dave all played Coup d’etat.  Alex won with 15300 after a succesful Coup against Dave in the first few turns of his rule.  Brandon was 2nd with 11700 managing to hold his entire reign Coupless.  Dave managed to regain some points due to his lost director ship by couping Chris and got back to 10000 evenly.  Chris ended with 2900.

4) Chris, Karen, Alex, Brandon, Dave and Michael then played 7 Wonders with Leaders.  Dave won at 70, Michael 65, Alex 63, Chris 49 and Brandon and Karen at 44.

5) Chris Karen, Dave, Michael and Brandon played a game of Robo Rally.  Everyone jumped on a giant conveyor belt to carry them to the first goal. As expected everyone was pelted by lasers for several turns as they were all following each other.  Dave managed to get off first successfully at the goal, while only Chris found himself falling into a pit due to getting bumped.  Dave got close to the final goal but found several of his tracks locked and this made progress slow.  Chris managed to not only catch up but pass ahead to victory due in large part to a clean deck and a fairly open board.

6)  Finally Chris, Dave, Michael, Brandon and Karen played Snowdonia.  Michael won with 135 points, followed by Dave at 101, Chris at 99, Karen at 75 and Brandon at 74.

BEWC Meeting Recap 1/4/14

Attendees: Dan Carey, Michael Feinberg, Scott Harris, Brandan James, Dave Landon, Karen Landon, and Alex Wright

Club Business: None.

4) Dan, Brandan, and Alex played Castles of Burgundy, which Alex one with a commanding 236 points over Dan’s 191 in second place.

5, 6) Dan, Michael, Brandan, Karen, Dave, Karen, and Alex played two rounds of Ca$h ‘n Gun$. In the first Dan one with $85,000 and Alex just behind with $80,000. For the second game, individual player powers were added, leading to a more brutal game iwht both Dave and Dan dying and Michael sneaking in with a $105,000 win with Alex in second at $95,000.

7) Dan, Michael, Brandan, Karen, Dave, and Karen hunted Alex in Scotland Yard, and despite a nice early breakout by Mr. X, Alex was hunted down in round 10.

8) Michael, Brandan, Karen, and Alex played Smash Up with victory being snatched from Michael’s Alien Zombies when Alex broke a base one round for Michael could break his. Alex’s Ninja Dinosaurs were victorious with 17 points, with Karen’s Robot Wizards in second.

BEWC Meeting Recap 10/5/13

Attendees:Dave Landon, Karen Landon, Alex Wright, Dan Carey, Michael Feinberg, Jim Halloran, Chris Cregan,  Brandan James,Victor Liu, Robbie and Frank Fulton

1) Alex, Michael, Brandan and Dave started off with a game of Lords of Waterdeep.  Alex won with 125 points followed by Michael, Brandan and finally Dave who got 106, 103 and 80 respectfully.

2)Jim bought Warparty and played a game with Dan, Chris and Victor.  It was the first time playing and the instructions though simple were poorly worded leading to a learning game.  Jim and Chris playing as the Goblins and Undead ended up winning over Dan and Victor who played the Dwarves and Humans.  The forces of evil had defeated the Dwarves and were set up to take the stronghold but not in the 12 turn time limit and so all agreed evil won a partial victory.

3)Alex won his second game this time while playing Antike.  Robbie and Frank joined the original group playing Waterdeep.  Alex got 7 points followed by Michael with 6, Brandan, Frank and Dave all received 5 while Robbie ended with 2.

4)Karen joined the Antike group for a game of 7 Wonders.  It was an odd low scoring game.  Alex thought his streak was broken with 62 but it ended up highest.  Robbie and Brandan ended with 58, Mike and Dave 57.  Frank got 47 and Karen got 44.

5)Chris, Alex, Michael, Brandan, Karen, Dave played a large game of Robo Rally.  It was a particularly gruesome game with a robot dieing nearly every round as everyone scrambled for the 1 Flag.  A long corridor before the flag it made it so Robots were bumping into each other as one would be advancing towards while another try and move away from.  Chris managed to pull out of the tussle early and finished as most people were just getting flag one.  Michael was the only other Robot to reach the 2nd flag.

5)Finally Chris, Alex, Michael, Brandan, Karen, Dave played a couple games of BANG.  The first was quite short with Michael as the Sheriff quickly killing Chris as the Renegade.  Dave, Karen and Alex then finished off the Michael while Brandan the Deputy was unable to help. The Outlaws won.

6)The 2nd game of BANG took considerably longer.  Brandan as the Sheriff had a good set up character which made him nearly invincible till a string of bad draws.  Alex the Renegade quickly took out Chris this time an Outlaw.  Brandan managed to take down Dave the Outlaw but Alex took out Michael as the Deputy.  The game reached a stalemate between Alex, Karen and Brandan.  The Outlaws won again after Karen ended finished Brandan with considerable help from Alex.

BEWC Meeting Recap 7/20/13

Attendees: Dan Carey, Michael Feinberg, Jim Halloran, Alex Jordan, David Knoyle, and Dave Olson

Games Played:
1) While waiting for more people to show up, Michael and Dave started off with Innovation. Early on, Michael was able to set up a scoring/achieving engine through the use of gunpowder and took the first five age achievements and seemed like he would run away with the game. Dave got combustion though and quickly stole all of the score back and took the age six through eight achievements and had plenty of score to pick up his fourth (the age 9). Michael however had been accumulating deep stacks of cards and once he was able to find some dogma effects to splay them, had more than three of each type of symbol, allowing him to claim the empire achievement, which was the sixth needed for him to win.

2) Dan, David, and Dave spent the bulk of the day playing GMT’s Andean Abyss. Dan was the government player, in charge of the police and army.  Dave K. played two sides, the AUC (right wing paramilitary) and the drug cartels.  Dave O. was the FARC, the Marxist guerillas.  The game started off with all building up their forces.  For most of the first third of the game, Dan’s population was in the 40’s, short of his victory condition of 60.  Dave K.’s cartels, which want to make money and stay out of the way, were not doing well and ran low on resources.  His AUC forces slowly built strength and amassed quite a bit of resources.  Dave O’s FARC got all of their units out on the board and built up their strength.
In the second third of the game, with Pastrana as president, Dave O’s FARC was able to establish some zones were he was safe from Dan’s government forces.  However, Dan’s army and police kept after Dave’s guerillas outside of those areas, holding the initiative by forcing them to stay on the run.  Dan did not build up much popular support but Dave O., did not do much to take any away.  Dave K’s AUC was able to get most of their bases out, but did not out number the FARC, the AUC victory condition.  The cartels started to amass more resources.
In the last part of the game, Uribe was elected president, so the FARC no longer had safe zones.  However, the FARC holed up in a few departments and was able to stave off any possible government assault.  Dan then went after the AUC, which were growing strong.  That knocked them down a bit.  He was also able to drive the cartels out of Cali, improving his popular support.  Otherwise the cartels amasses an immense amount of resources and were flirting meeting their victory conditions (>10 bases, >40 resources).  Dave O., and Dan took steps to eliminate some of the cartel bases to prevent a victory.
The end of the game came six cards from the bottom of the stack.  No one won the game out right.  Dan was able to increase his popular support some though.  With the tie breaker rules, Dave K., won, as his AUC and cartels were closest to their victory conditions, just ahead of Dan.  Dave O.’s FARC came in third.  Overall the game took five hours.

3) Michael, Jim, and Alex played Lords of Waterdeep. It was a close game, but getting the lieutenant (and it’s extra worker) as one of Michael’s starting quests gave him the advantage he needed to win with 112 points to Jim’s 106 and Alex’s 104.

4) Michael, Jim, and Alex moved on to 7 Wonders with the Leaders expansion. On totaling up the score, it looked like Alex had won with his 66 points from a fairly diverse strategy, but upon checking the math, Michael just edged him out with 68 points, mostly from three full sets of science (48 points).

5) Moving on to something more cooperative, Michael, Jim, and Alex played Pandemic at the normal five epidemic difficulty level. The epidemics seemed stacked to the top of the deck, but they managed to quickly sunset red, giving them some breathing room. Blue was also then sunset and it looked like they might run away with the game when outbreaks in the Middle East and Africa pushed the game to the brink. Cards were in hand to cure yellow and black but pretty much any yellow card coming up would have caused two more outbreaks and a lost game. Luckily, the cards were kind and the diseases were cured, just before another epidemic card would have been drawn.

6,7) Michael, Jim, and Alex then played two games of Settlers of Catan. The first game was fairly balanced with everyone around 6 or 7 points, when Michael was able to steal Alex’s longest road which combined with a point from a development card got Michael to 10 points and the win. The second game had an odd map set up, where Michael, despite being first player and getting last pick of locations, was able to get an almost perfect settlement selection with all resource types in high probability mid numbers. The dice were definitely in his favor, bringing in large quantities of lumber and bricks, allowing a huge road network to divide up the board in his favor and he ran away with the game in a quick victory.

8) Michael, Jim, Alex and Dave finished up with Love Letter, where Jim was most effective in getting his notes to the princess.

BEWC Meeting Recap 1/19/13

Attendees: Shane Andrews, John Boyle, Ben Blankley, Greg Chandra, Michael Feinberg, Ryan Frans, Jim Halloran, Richard Heller, Paul Hsu, Michael Kelly, Melissa Laface, and Lane Taylor

Club Business: 2013 officers were elected and we voted to purchase Lords of Waterdeep and The New Science.

Games Played:
1) Shane, John, Michael F, and Paul started with a game of Puerto Rico. Michael was the only one who had played before, giving him a significant advantage, but everyone else seemed to pick up the mechanics and some strategy fairly quickly. Michael turned an early coffee monopoly combined with both the large and small markets into a money making machine, allowing him to build three of the 4 point large buildings. Michael won with 44 points, largely from buildings, but Shane wasn’t far behind with 38 points from an impressive shipping operation.

2) Jim, Michael K, and Lane considered playing Flat Top, but after being looking at the time commitment and complexity decided to switch to Shogun. They only played one year, which was characterized by the peasants being much stronger than expected and an extremely close result – Michael 22, Lane 21, and Jim 20.

3) Melissa taught Shane and Paul Ora et Labora where she won with a comfortable lead.

4) John, Michael F, Ryan, and Richard played a close fought game of Eclipse. The game had very little early combat, with Richard as the Planta and John as the Descendants of Draco both significantly expanding and leaving Ryan’s Mechanema and particularly Michael’s Hydran Progress mostly isolated. Ryan was able to take over the galactic center and start an arms race with Richard (as well as breaking his treaty with John and conquering one of his systems), but Michael was left to concentrate on technology and hope that point-scoring monoliths would become available. They finally did on the last turn, but Michael built them one action too early, committing all of his production, which had been serving as a check against Ryan’s aggression since it could have rapidly been turned into a fleet of technologically advanced ships. Once that threat was gone, Ryan turned his fleet against Michael instead of Richard and conquered all but one of his systems, knocking Michael down to only 19 points at the end of the game. The game ended with a bang, when Richard sent in a pair of cruisers each armed with 3 plasma missiles against a large fleet of Ryan’s and lucky rolling caused him to hit on 10 of his 12 dice – one more than the nine needed to wipe him out. Unfortunately Richard didn’t have neutron bombs, so couldn’t conquer the system and transfer its points from Ryan to him. That left Ryan winning the game with 42 points to Richard’s 38.

5) Jim and Michael K spent the afternoon with Twilight Struggle, where Michael’s communists prevailed in the 10th round.

6) Ben and Greg taught themselves the Rivals for Catan card game. Once they figured out what they were doing, they enjoyed themselves with Ben winning.

7) Ben, Greg, Michael F, Richard, and Melissa finished up with 7 Wonders with both the Leaders and Cities expansions. Richard amassed an impressive 55 points in science, but his 65 total points weren’t enough to catch up with Melissa, who took good advantage of the expansions to earn 26 points from white and black cards. Combined with a generally diversified strategy otherwise, she net 68 points for the win. Michael edged out Richard for second place, also with 65 points, mostly from guilds and blue cards and with more leftover money for the tiebreaker.

BEWC Meeting Recap 12/15/12

Attendees: Greg Chandra, Chris Cregan, Michael Feinberg, Frank Fulton, Robbie Fulton, Jim Halloran, and Joe Kauffman

Club Business: Nominations for 2013 officers are open.

Games Played:

1,2) Michael and Jim started with two quick games of Lost Cities with Jim winning both decisively.

3) Chris, Michael, and Jim played Kingsburg with all of the To Forge A Realm expansions, with Chris just edging out Jim 46 points to 44 points.

4) Greg, Chris, Michael, Jim, and Joe played Lungarno, where Michael won with 31 points, but the battle for second place was closely fought – Jim had 26 points and the tie breaker of most extra tiles over Chris (also with 26 points) and Greg just behind with 25.

5) Greg, Chris, Michael, Frank, Robbie, Jim, and Joe played a full 7 player game of 7 Wonders with the Leaders expansion. Chris’s money heavy strategy combined with the gamer guild gave him a 69 point victory over Joe’s 68 points from a diversified strategy.

6) Chris and Jim broke of to play Twilight Struggle where history was rewritten. Chris won as the soviets by VP in turn 3 helped by claiming dominance in Asia and three scoring cards coming up that turn.

7) Greg, Michael, Frank, and Robbie finished up with Ascending Empires. Greg went on the offensive early and squabbled with Frank allowing them both to collect victory points from shooting each other’s ships out of the sky. Michael meanwhile was left mostly alone to colonize and then build cities on planets in each of the other quadrants. An endgame attempt from Robbie to steal one of Michael’s planets turned into an opportunity for him to earn more victory points from the back and forth combat, and the game ended with Michael having a comfortable 31 point win with Greg in second at 23 points.

BEWC Meeting Recap 10/6/12

Attendees: Monique Ball, Chris Cregan, Michael Feinberg, Frank Fulton, Robbie Fulton, Jim Halloran, Scott Harris, Michael Kelly, Chris Leitenberger, Josh Lichti, Luke Miller, Heather Murphy, Dave Olson, Alex Wright, and Elaine Wright

Club Business: None.

Games Played:
1) Chris C, Michael F, Dave, and Alex all got there early to try out the club’s new copy of Mage Knight. Having all at least skimmed the rules we got into the game fairly quickly and had a lot of fun with it. There were still a number of surprises though at the end game scoring and one extra crystal that Chris picked up because he had nothing better to do with a card ended up turning into three extra victory points which gave him the win with 38 points to Michael’s second place 35.

2) Jim, Scott, Chris L, and Michael K played 7 Wonders with the Leaders and Cities expansions. Chris’s blue card strategy just edged out Mike’s science strategy 74 to 73.

3) Scott had to leave, so Josh, briefly back from Japan, stepped in for him and joined Jim, Chris L, and Mike K for a game of Kingsburg with the To Forge A Realm expansion. Josh ran away with the game with 53 point wins, but all the players for some reason felt that it was important that I point out that Mike came in last place, despite getting extra victory points for being the fairy.

4) After finishing Mage Knight, Chris C, Michael F, Dave, and Alex were joined by Frank and Robbie for their own game of 7 Wonders with both expansions. Chris continued his trend of beating Michael by 3 points, winning with 75 points to Michal’s second place 72.

5) Jim, Chris L, Josh and Michael K took over the Mage Knight board, but unfortunately they ran out of time to finish before the rec center closed. They got through one day and one night of the first scenario, and at the end Josh was leading with 26 points with Jim in second with 20.

6) Chris C, Michael F, Luke and Alex moved on to Castles of Burgundy. Through most of the game it looked like Chris was comfortably leading, but at the end when all of the extra points from yellow tiles were tallied up, Michael finally made up for his two losses to Chris earlier in the day by edging him out 225 points to 224.

7) Monique, Frank, Robbie, Heather, and Dave played the Germany map of Power Grid, where Robbie dominated the game.
Monique ball

8,9) With a little time left before the rec center closed, Chris C, Michael F, Luke, Alex and Elaine played two rounds of Tsuro. It came down to the last piece, but Michael just barely edged out Elaine in the first game. In the second, Alex held on the longest, followed by Luke.

10) Monique, Heather, and Dave started a game of Pandemic and were working on their second cure when we had to leave.
