BEWC Meeting Recap 11/15/14

Attendees: Michael Feinberg, Jim Halloran, Chris Cregan, Dave Olson, Alex Jordan, Jay Olson, Ken MacArthur, Jeremee Schrear, Ed Magran, Ryan Frans, Anthony Eaton, Maria and Matt Willey

1) The meeting started with a game of Seven Wonders with Alex managing to just squeak out a victory as Alexandria with 59 points.  Jay was next at 56 with Giza, Micheal got 47 with Babylon even with missing a couple science buildings, for his first game Ken got 44 as Halikanarsis, Jim was just behind him with 43 as olympia, Dave got 37 as Rhodes and Jeremee got 32 as Ephesos.

2) While that was finishing up Ed set up Fire on the Lake.  Matt and Maria started off as the Veit Con but were later relieved by Ryan when they left.  Ed played as the Americans and Jim played as the US allied Vietnamese.  Things started off well for the Americans as they demolished the NBA but near the end the were getting surrounded by new forces and were trying to pull back from the War before they started racking up casualties.  Unfortunately the game did not end up getting finished.

3) Another long game was going on at a different table.  Ken, Jeremee and Jay all delved into a dungeon in Descent.  Despite Dave, an experienced and cruel Dungeon Master, the party managed to survive long enough against Giants and other monsters to win out in the end.

4)The third and final long game was Firefly.  The captains were tasked with a series of highly deadly jobs, each one likely to kill one or more of their crew.  It was a game of riches, as good characters and ship upgrades were easily drawn at the start of the game.  Anthony got off to a very quick start, a crew of hill folk and Jane as well as an assortment of firepower.  He was the first to grab up the first Goal token but was harassed by a Reaver on the way to the 2nd.  He lost several crew and more importantly turns allowing Micheal to pass him, grabbing the 2nd token and making his way to the final objective overcoming some Reaver road blocks.  Alex had a good game but got poor luck on the objective cards and ended up being a few turns behind Micheal.  Chris was probably playing a different game.  He spent the game in the slow freighter ship collecting cargo and finishing log haul trucking missions.  He ended up being incredibly wealthy and in dead last.  Micheal won the game with both Anthony and Alex close behind.

5) To end the day off three games of Bang the Dice Game were played by Chris Jeremee, Mike Jay Alex and Anthony.  It was a bad day for the law as the outlaws proceeded to get a hat trick.  Chris Dave and Jeremee won  the first game, Micheal Anthony and Jay the 2nd, and finally Dave Chris and Jeremee won the final.

3) Alex, Dave L, Jim and Scott played Caylus.  Alex won.

4) Two games of Mansion of Madness  was played by Chris, Brandon, Dave O, Jay and Ken.  Chris was keeper the first game titled “Green Eyed Boy”, the party entered the mansion which was mostly empty.  They moved through the room getting the first few clues with ease.  Jay was the holder of the key items and was given a secret card by the keeper.  The party was wondering if maybe he was turned into a traitor but continued to trust him.  Dave was left behind after being attacked by a flock of witches and getting a broken leg.  Another card given to Dave which made him hesitant for his character to take his life.  Ken ran off ahead but after entering a darkened room constantly under attack by Witches.  Jay managed to catch up and continue finding clues while Brandon getting a secret card of his own moved into random rooms.  Dave managed to hobble to the starting room and the party converged to heal him up but found they lost control of their actions.  The turn ended up with Dave dead after Ken was forced to throw his lantern at him.   This was the victory condition for the keeper, Brandon’s secret card made him the traitor, thus Chris and Brandon won.

The 2nd game Brandon was keeper as he had played through the scenario before in “Blood Ties”.  The investigators managed to gather all the clues but the final puzzle piece was in a pit filled with zombies.  The party ventured in but was defeated, having been vastly weakened by very aggressive Keeper throughout the game.

5) Dave L Alex and Jim played a game of Ra.  Dave managed to win by like a lot.

BEWC Meeting Recap 9/6/14

Attendees: Jim Halloran, Brandon James, Dan Carey, Alex Wright, Dave Landon, Chris Cregan, Jay Olson, Dave Olson, and Micheal Feinberg.

1)Kingdoms started off the day as Jim Brandon Dan and Alex waited for others to arrive.  Alex just edged out Jim for the victory, 181 to 178.  Brandon ended with 138 and Dan ended with 93.

2) Arkham horror was the main entree, with Brandon, Chris, both Dave’s, Mike trying to fend off Asteroth from consuming the world… atleast for a little while.  The only expansion that was added was The Curse of the Dark Pharaoh.  Good was fortunate at the start and managed to shut down three gates with little going wrong.  Though shortly after this, the few open gates on the board had a series of monster explosions and the heroes were forced to try and quell the numbers before responding to gates.  Some were wounded, more driven insane but they bounced back, and a lucky gate closer removed a nearly invincible beast before it could wreck much havok.  After this it was fairly smooth sailing.  and in the end Good managed to win by closing and sealing enough gates.

3)  Those who did not play in the Arkham horror game decided to play something more realistic, but still with the threat of extinction of all life on earth.  Jim and Dan squared off in Twilight Struggle and in both games Jim managed to out politicize Dan.

4)  Dave, Chris, Micheal, Brandon and Jay all played a game of Dragon Slayer.  Dave managed to win with 47 with a last round gamble that really paid off.  Chris, earlier in the round played it safer with only 45, Micheal, starting the final round had only 30 while Branodn and Jay ended with 24 both getting eaten in the last round.

5)Firefly was played with the expanded map.  The mission had the captains trying to economize their missions, with only three available from each contact and the game ended with three contact piles exhausted.  Chris managed to get off to an early lead, stacking up on engineering and successfully boarding Micheals ship, stealing several of the covetted Jobs.  In the end Chris won at 19700, followed by Brandon at 3600 and Micheal at 2500.

6)Domain was the final game, Chris ended with 40, Dave at 39, Brandoon at 17 and Micheal at 11.

BEWC Meeting Recap 8/16/14

Attendees: Michael Feinberg, Jim Halloran, Matt Walker

1,2) Michael, Jim, and Matt played two games of Dominion. In both games, particularly the first, everyone spent too long building up their decks before cutting over to collecting victory points. In the first game, Michael won with 21 points from a single colony, single province, and a handful of VP chits from playing monument, while no one else had moved on from their starting estates. In the second, all three players were going for villages, bridges, and peddlers, but it was a little closer, with Michael winning with 19 and Jim just behind at 15.

3) Michael, Jim, and Matt moved on to Kingsburg, where Michael won with 42 points and a miscalculation on the final combat by Jim led to Matt just edging him out for second place, 32 to 30.

BEWC Meeting Recap 8/2/14

Attendees: Karen Landon, Dave Landon, Greg Chandra, Michael Feinberg, Jim Halloran, Matt Walker

1)  The day started off with a nice friendly game of Blokus.  Jim won with a commendable score of 25, Karen had 19, Matt ended with 17 and Michael got 12.  The second game saw Matt get 17 again and Michael got 12 however these ended up being the high scores in a much more confrontational game.

2) Next up was elephant racing in Formula E.  It was a mad scramble as sacred cows continually blocked the way of the racers making them smash together in several deadlocks.  Karen managed to break out of one of these cow walls only to close the hole up behind her allowing her to distance herself from the pack.  While she was continually plagued by mouse problems she managed to cross the finish line just as the rest of the pack was starting to make it near scoring range.

3) 7 Wonders with Dave’s new leaders expansion was played next.  With a very heavy military focus Michael managed to destroy his opponents getting a grand total of 80 points.  Over twenty points more than 2nd, everyone else was neck and neck though.  Next up was Karen and Dan at 59, Chris at 55, Matt at 53  Dave at 52 and Jim at 47.

4) Finally there was a five player Firefly game.  In the mission The Choices We Make players got goal tokens for completing Illegal jobs, and what’s more they could STEAL goals from other players with a successful piracy mission.  Chris managed to win after attacking Greg, stealing one token from him and gaining another for a completed illegal piracy job.  From Jubal his captain to his expanded 9 person crew he was well set up for piracy.  Michael though, had over a fifty-fifty chance to beat him a turn before, attempting to board Dave for the victory.  Dave had some thrillin’ heroics though and soundly rebuffed the attackers.  It should be noted that it was Dave, Matt and Greg’s first game.

BEWC Meeting Recap 7/19/14

Attendees: Bruce Clark, Michael Feinberg, Jim Halloran, Victor Liu, Dave Olson, Jay Olson, Matt Walker

1) Bruce, Michael, Victor, and Jim started off with Lords of Waterdeep with the Scoundrels of Skullport expansion. After being behind for most of the beginning, Michael thought he had a chance to win after completing a 25 point quest and then following up with a 40 point quest soon after, but Jim used his plot quests to good effect to clear out all of the corruption he had accumulated and won with a commanding 156 points to Michael’s 130, with Bruce and Victor just behind at 119 and 116.

2,3) Michael, Jim, Victor, and Matt moved on to play two games of Dominion. The first game was the predefined ‘Biggest Money’ set from Prosperity. On the last turn, Michael had a little extra money and an extra buy, so bought an estate in addition to the colony, and that one extra point proved decisive in his 44 to 43 point win over Jim. The second game was with a random set of cards, but Michael was again victorious, this time with 59 points over Jim’s 41 point second place.

4) Michael, Jim, Jay, and Matt sat down to the First Contact mission of Battlestations with Dave serving as the referee. With the alien planet sending out a steady stream of missiles, the team decided the best plan was to run as far away as possible and send a science probe to investigate instead. Jim (the pilot) had to leave early, but not much piloting was needed to keep running away. Jay’s really lucky shooting kept the missiles from hitting the ship while Matt narrowed down the alien’s hidden message and the team was able to send back another probe with a message of peace and warp away before being destroyed by the missiles for an ‘overwhelming success’.

BEWC Meeting Recap 7/5/14

Attendees: Dan Carey, Brandan James, Dave Landon, Karen Landon, Dave Olson, Alex Wright, Elaine Wright

Games Played

1) Dave L, Karen, Alex and Elaine played Rampage.  Elaine chomped up the most meeples, including multiple full sets, for a resounding 31 point win.  Alex caused the most damage, with a tall stack of building floors in his stash for a final score of 24 points, and Dave spent most of the game chasing blondes, also picking up 24 points.  Karen ended up with a nice pile of monster teeth and meeples for 17 points.

2) Scotland Yard detectives Brandan, Dave L, Karen, Dave O and Alex chased Elaine (Ms. X) through the streets of London.  The detectives were set up in a good position in the middle of the board, but Ms. X led them on a wily chase, using ferries pretty extensively.  She was almost able to sneak out of a trap in the southwest corner of the board, but it was not to be.  The long arm of the law was able to catch up with her, teaching the kids in the room a valuable lesson that crime does not pay.

3) Dan, Brandan and Alex spent most of the day in an epic game of Mage Knight Board Game.  They spent most of the game trying to find the cities, which did not show up until the last ~5 tiles were revealed.  That gave them time to build up their skills by picking on poor defenseless orcs and dragons.  Although the game was semi cooperative and they were able to accomplish their mutual goal of sacking the cities, Alex came out on top as the most revered mage with 225 prestige (?), followed by Brandan with 175 and Dan with 95.

4) Dave L, Karen, Dave O and Elaine played Airlines Europe.  Dave O made an early investment in White Winds out of Russia, playing 2 of the 7 available cards in the first round and confident that he could take advantage until at least the first scoring round, but then Dave L dropped 2 White Winds cards into his portfolio sharing in the benefits for most of the game.  Dave L also invested heavily in Flying is Simply Fun out of London, and was able to capitalize on that investment throughout the game.  Karen diversified significantly, giving her a strong advantage scoring on airlines for which she was the sole owner.  Elaine had a targeted approach, investing heavily in three airlines plus the Abacus airline.  In the end, Dave O was able to grab one more stock in White winds, no longer having to share majority ownership with Dave L in the last scoring round.  Final Score: Dave O – 109, Dave L – 104, Karen – 102, Elaine – 80.

5) Dave L, Dave O and Elaine played the cooperative The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.  The rich theme of Middle Earth adventure was oozing from the game, immersing the players in the rich landscape and lore.  Wait, this is a Knizia game.  We pretty much drew cards and rolled dice until we were done.  Also, since this was really just a movie tie-in it only covered the portion of the story that was covered in the first Hobbit movie.  Still, it was pretty cool.  The party of dwarves/hobbit had to make it from the Shire to the rescue by the eagles at the end of the movie.  We did pretty well, not really feeling too much danger.  We played the game at the easiest level and were able to accomplish our task with a final score of 14 points.  Once we are able to master the beginner level with a 20 point win we can move on to the next level.

6) Dave L, Karen, Dave O and Elaine played Unspeakable Words.  Not really sure what the final score was, but it did not really matter.  Dave O was the only one who did not go insane, so he won by default.

7) Dave L, Karen, Dave O and Elaine played Robo Rally.  Dave L got out to an early lead.  He was pretty far from the pack, so he was able to avoid most of the carnage.  Elaine had some bad card draws the first couple of turns, so she was lagging behind.  Dave O and Karen were following each other around most of the game, which would have been fine except that Karen had souped-up lasers that caused extra damage or allowed her to lock registers.  There was much powering down happening in this game.  In fact, every robot spent at least one turn powering down.  Some (Dave O) spent several turns powered down.  A locked U-Turn register is a fate I would not wish upon my worst enemy.  In the end, Dave L won by touching the last flag, Elaine came in second having tagged the second flag, Dave O and Karen were only able to manage getting to the first flag.

8) Dave L, Karen, Dave O and Elaine played Bananagrams.  Karen was victorious

9) Brandan, Dave L, Karen, Alex and Elaine played Bananagram in which Alex won.
